Word spread across the country that American Indians would be able to present themselves through exhibits. In 1893, Chicago put on the World’s Columbian Exposition. This led to poverty, starvation and severely difficult living circumstances that would continue to plague tribes for years to come. More often than not, the tribes would struggle for what limited supplies and resources were available. The land allotted to tribes was often rejected by settlers. Those who survived the trip would face new hardships. Relocation itself was a tragic undertaking for tribes. The tribes in what is now Chicago and the Great Lakes area would feel the brunt of many land cessations and several relocation efforts over the coming years after this. This would mean the relocation of tens of thousands of indigenous people still living east of the river. On May 28, 1830, President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act proposing to relocate indigenous tribes west of the Mississippi River. The Treaty of Ghent, which was written between the British and the United States following the war, felt like a betrayal to the tribes who had fought alongside the British against the United States government, and with economic shifts toward agriculture and industry, the Americans and British no longer felt the need to maintain economic and military relationships with the tribes of the Great Lakes area. The War of 1812 significantly affected the relationship between the Indigenous tribes in the Great Lakes area with the British and the United States. War and starvation further decimated tribal populations. The arrival of Europeans on the continent had led to marked losses among the tribes of the Great Lakes area through the introduction of new diseases and the push of Eastern tribes westward. Reciprocal trade relationships between the tribes and Europeans helped maintain the tribal hold on the Illinois area around Lake Michigan throughout the 1700s. Some roadways in Chicago reflect the trade roads followed by these tribes. Post-European contact, the tribes maintained trade arrangements with both the French and British. These tribes had thriving trade networks in the Great Lakes area prior to European contact. The Chicago area is located on ancestral lands of indigenous tribes, such as the Council of the Three Fires-comprised of the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi Nations-as well as the Miami, Ho-Chunk, Menominee, Sac, Fox, Kickapoo, and Illinois Nations. Max Cavalera and Alex Newport trade vocals and influences on an album that sounds somewhere between new Sepultura/early Soulfly and mid-period Godflesh. While I would've love to see more of Nailbomb, "Point Blank" is still a great album for those who like industrial and thrash. The band would release a live album named "Proud to Commit Commercial Suicide" a year later before Max and Alex disbanded it to do other things. The mix of industrial and thrash is done well, the vocals are very angsty, and the lyrics expose a lot of the world's problems. These descriptive and exposing lyrics are present throughout the album, and they're written well.Įven though this is the only album they've ever released, "Point Blank" is still a brilliant album. Max and Alex's vocals are also more grueling and pissed, which makes the lyrics feel like they genuinely hate nukes. The track goes for a more slower tempo and has a further emphasis on the industrial tunes like in "Religious Cancer", giving the actions done by the countries a more sinister tone. Further more, the lyrics are enhanced by the instruments and vocals. The simile of how they treat them like toys is clever, and it expresses the problems with countries being careless on nukes. This verse talks about how countries are misusing nuclear bombs. For example, in the track "Sum of Your Achievements", this verse quotes: Children burning crawling dying Nailbomb mainly focused on political and social themes, and they are written well here. While the vocals are a bit weak in "Exploitation", they still maintain the raging atmosphere of the instruments very well. Their vocals also flow well to the instruments, since the dark industrial style flows well the rants of Max and Alex. In that song, their voice sounds more irate than usual as they scream about the problems of the church. This is especially true with "Religious Cancer". Their voice sound angry and vexed, and they have a punk-like attitude in their voice. Max and Alex do the vocals together, and they are great. The instrumentals on this album are fantastic, and remain some of the best in this type of genre.Īnother great thing about "Point Blank" would be the vocals. Other great instrumentals on this album would be "Vai Toma no Cú", "Cockroaches", and "For Fuck's Sake", since they mix in the thrash and industrial elements just as well. Even the bass is good, since it follows along the guitars well and plays its own riffs sometimes. The drums also beat very fast, and in some of the grander moments, it would play some blastbeats that further execute the fast-paced riffs. The guitars play these angry riffs that set in a tone of fury and angst. They are good at setting in a dark atmosphere, and this atmosphere would be magnified when the guitars kick in. The album starts off with the track "Wasting Away", which begins with some dark industrial synths. As stated before, this album mixes in industrial and thrash metal sounds, and they mix them a lot better than you'd think. One of the best elements on this album is the instruments. Not only does it mix these two contrasting genres well, but it also had some great vocals and deep lyrics. People didn't think that the dark electronics of industrial and the raging riffs of thrash would go together well, but to the shock of a lot of people, it actually worked. They would release their only album "Point Black" a year later, and the initial reception of the album was mixed. In 1993, Max Cavalera from Sepultura and Alex Newport from Fudge Tunnel formed an industrial/thrash metal band named Nailbomb, which was previously named Hate Project and Sickman. The third plank of Bregman’s utopia, on top of an impossibilist universal minimum income and an unlikely 15-hour week, is a world of open borders. How much better if we recognised the fact and opted for leisure? Alternatively, and much more realistically, how about creating more purposed companies and more purposed work? There is more than enough to do. “Work”, in terms of executing a craft or attempting to make the world a better place, is becoming the preserve of too few. As he argues, too many of today’s jobs are ephemera, creating little or no value and making their holders despair, and if they ceased there would be little or no discernible fall in our living standards. The proposition is that because a rogue capitalism is going to automate away most of our jobs, human wellbeing can only be assured by everyone receiving a universal basic income.īut his joyful dissection of much of the purposeless work thrown up by modern “bullshit” capitalism hits home. Financially, behaviourally and organisationally bonkers, this idea is gaining traction on the bien pensant left. My biggest beef is the idea that increasingly grips liberal thinkers desperate for anything radical – the concept of a universal income for all. Gone is a belief in socialism, science, great international institutions or even a willingness to experiment with new ways of living.īut if this is the book’s big insight, much of the rest fluctuates from the genuinely challenging to politically correct tosh. Liberals can hardly inspire themselves, let alone the electorate. Working family tax credits or spending 0.7% of GDP on aid simply don’t cut it. The liberal left, declares Rutger Bregman, a 28-year-old Dutch historian, has no comparable vision. The best help we can give the poor in the less developed world is to give them access to our land of plenty, he argues It is Mr Trump and Mr Farage who dream of a world of America and Britain first, revelling in low taxes and little or no state, liberated from the dark forces of the UN, World Trade Organisation and the EU. Utopia has become the preserve of the right. The trouble with today’s liberals – witness Hillary Clinton or any of Labour’s recent past or present leadership – is that they have lost any comparable vision, however far-fetched or unrealistic. Medieval idealists imagined a land of plenty – Cockaigne – where rivers ran with wine, everyone was equal and partied and drank all their lives. Celebrate the grip that utopia has on our imagination. It was the hope we could fly, conquer disease, motorise transport, build communities of the faithful, discover virgin land or live in permanent peace that has propelled men and women to take the risks and obsess about the new that, while not creating the utopia of which they dreamed, has at least got us some of the way. It is utopian visions that have driven humanity forwards. This is a book with one compelling proposition for which you can forgive the rest. That's a noteworthy comparison because our 20 test configurations were so similar. Sarah Tew/CNETīattery life here was very modestly better than in the 2016 15-inch MacBook Pro, going from 10:05 to 10:43 in our streaming video playback test. Tomb Raider hit 54.1 frames per second at high detail settings and 1,680 by 1,050-pixel resolution while looking great on the Retina display. This isn't a gaming laptop, nor has the state of Mac gaming really improved much recently, but you can definitely play some games on here. There was a modest boost over the similarly high-end 2016 version we tested last year, which had a similar CPU from one generation earlier. This high-end MacBook Pro laptop blew through our standard benchmarks, even when compared with something like a high-end Windows gaming laptop. It should come as no surprise that a hugely expensive laptop with a 2.9GHz Intel Core i7-7820HQ processor would be very fast. Dell and other PC makers sometimes throw in free USB-C plugs for hooking up video and data connections Apple does not. You'll either have to adjust your workflow, or pick up some of the converters and adapters offered by Apple and others. Or DisplayPort, having a direct Ethernet connection or just plugging in a wired mouse, it's a different story. However, if you're very invested in plugging in USB memory keys, directly connecting to a display via Want USB-C ports? No problem! James Martin/CNET The less-expensive 13-inch Pro without the Touch Bar has two ports. On the 15-inch Pro, and the 13-inch Pro with the Touch Bar, you get four USB-C ports, two per side. Sometimes, as in the case of the MacBook Pro (but not the 12-inch MacBook), these double as data-heavy Thunderbolt 3 ports, as well. A USB-C port can handle data, power, video and more. USB-C is smaller, and its plugs are reversible, so they'll always fit without needing to rotate them 180 degrees. From relying on them completely across three generations of the 12-inch MacBook, two iterations of the MacBook Pro and USC-C laptops made by Asus, HP and others, I've had plenty of experience with this new plug. I don't really mind having only USB-C ports on a laptop. A superflat keyboard like this makes sense in a very thin 12-inch laptop, but on the bigger Pro I'd prefer the original keys with more travel. It's not as tactile as the old-style Mac keyboards and has a learning curve to typing comfortably. It's paired with a very flat keyboard, a design now found in the 12-inch MacBook as well as the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro. The trackpad surface is larger than an iPhone screen. So, how did we get here? It seems that while the Navy did order the watercraft, it hadn’t verified whether or not Boeing was capable of making them. However, here we are in 2022 awaiting the first to be delivered, hundreds of millions of dollars over budget with the other four Orca subs slated for 2024. Regardless, the branch provided Boeing with contracts to build them with the first scheduled to arrive in 2020 and four more by the end of 2022. Navy knew it had a need for the Orca drone submarine, but it wasn’t exactly sure if it could be built. But before we dive into the deep, it’s important to note how we got here because it could have not happened at all. Read next: Everything You Never Knew About the History of the Military Submarine Boeing Orca XLUUV: The Drone Submarine That Could Have Never Beenīy all accounts, the Boeing Orca submarine is looking as if it will begin testing and undergoing missions soon. Their use, effectiveness, and purpose continue to evolve as drone submarines look to enter the battlefield. The Orca submarine is a natural step in this field of unmanned underwater systems presenting new capabilities for fighting on, or rather, under the high seas. But using drones underwater is a still developing evolution of warfare. Using drones in warfare is a pretty common concept for most at this point. Silver Efex Pro 2) and "Open" any RGB type file, (not raws), then "Save" the result. The only difference is that Lr will create a TIFF for each file selected before it sends them to HDR-Efex to combine into the HDR. You need to know where these folders were placed when you add each program to the External Editor Presets.Ģ) I have also found that 'HDR Efex' will also work as an external editor preset (if it does not install in the Export Presets). I think I chose the Windows "Programs" folders so I have this (in Windows). It is not hard to do, just tedious for each of the Nik programs.ġ) The "Nik Collection" installer program basically extracts (unzips) the Nik programs, makes links for Ps & Lr, and saves them to folders of your choosing. in the instructions at- Plug-ins do not appear in Lightroom after installing - Nik Collection Help Nik Collection 5 and Lightroom - not working whatsoever Nik Collection by DxO mac davidPR (david riddell) July 22, 2022, 8:18am 1 When I attempt to edit a file in any of the Nik Collection (as plugins for Lightroom) I have problems which ultimately result in me having to close LR and lose any changes made in Nik. Yes so you e ruled out everything that is common sense, as you say. Okay so you want to rule it completely out. So why would you try to rationalize and apply critical thinking? To be skeptic about it? Then why join in the first place? Key legal elements of obstructing an official proceedingġ8 U.S.C. I also discuss the long-standing DOJ standards that point directly toward prosecution in cases such as this one. After explaining the elements of the charge, I address skepticism that Trump will be charged or convicted, and then explain why a prosecution of Trump is both winnable and necessary despite the known risks. For the sake of simplicity, the following analysis focuses on evidence that proves the substantive offense.). (Note: other charges may be available against Trump, and he could (and likely would) be charged with conspiracy, which requires an agreement to commit a crime, or aiding and abetting, in connection with a substantive obstruction offense. § 1512(c)(2), the charge DOJ has brought against more than 280 Jan. In the discussion that follows, I explain the basis for this conclusion by focusing on a prosecution of Trump for obstructing an official proceeding in violation of 18 U.S.C. And when it is examined in light of the Department’s Principles of Federal Prosecution, Attorney General Garland should have little choice but to conclude that the implications for democracy and the rule of law of not prosecuting Trump far outweigh the risks of a trial loss, which exist in every complex case. 6 defendants, it looks formidable, not weak. 6 riots and Trump’s inner circle–and in the context of the cases the Department has already prosecuted against other Jan. The former president’s defense counsel would be wise to advise him accordingly. “The chances that Trump will be convicted of any crime are slim to none,” wrote one former prosecutor, and “a failure to convict will only embolden him and his followers.”Īs a former federal civil rights prosecutor who investigated and tried police abuse cases under the onerous “willfulness” standard for many years, I have a more optimistic view of the Justice Department’s (DOJ’s) prospects for successfully prosecuting Trump. Yet Judge Carter’s opinion also met with a wave of warnings from legal journalists and expert commentators that accountability advocates shouldn’t get their hopes up for a Trump prosecution, largely because of the difficult challenge of proving his criminal intent beyond a reasonable doubt to a unanimous jury of twelve, and the too-high risk of an acquittal or hung jury. As one analyst wrote in the New York Times, the ruling “intensified scrutiny on the question of whether the Justice Department can, should or will try to charge him with the same crimes.” But the impact of a matter-of-fact pronouncement on Trump’s potential culpability from a federal judge was unmistakable. Judge Carter’s pronouncement didn’t break any news about the evidence or the potential crimes Trump committed, all of which have been well– documented. 6 to obtain documents from a key witness, found that Trump had “ more likely than not” committed federal crimes in trying to interfere with the electoral count proceedings that day. A growing consensus has emerged among legal experts, scholars and those otherwise concerned with the health of our democracy, that Trump’s actions to overturn the election warrant criminal accountability. 6, 2021, a national debate has swirled around whether former President Donald Trump will be investigated and prosecuted for any crimes he may have committed through his efforts to remain in office despite his clear election loss. |
